One piece of anecdotal evidence that supports the theory of problems with point to multipoint comes from yesterday afternoon's ARTT conference call. Henry Hirsch (or maybe it was Ron Alexa) stated that ARTT was still not deploying P-MP equipment in the 38 GHz frequencies because the vendors of that equipment were concentrating on lower speed requirements that would be needed in the CLEC environment rather than the data environment. This is in stark contrast to previous guidance that P-MP equipment would begin to be deployed this summer.

My guess is that, for some reason, vendors are having trouble scaling up to higher frequencies, i.e. 38 GHz. Just a guess, and I'm sure that others on the thread have a better handle on the technical issues.
