Delbert -- first, allow me to acknowledge that my manner of addressing you this afternoon may have been more unflattering to me than to you. At least that's what the oh-so-correct Joanster has implied (if, that is, I get her meaning). Then again, it's possible that Joan's world view is more aligned with yours and, as a consequence, she fails to see how your manner of stating a point may be just as insulting to me as some exaggerated characterization of you may be to you/her. Although the post I'm responding to is not addressed to me; it might as well be so I will answer. Re. Ollie North -- I don't know the political or historical views of X (and would not presume to speak for her) but do note that she said nothing in North's defense. In my post to you, I volunteered an opinion of North that was as harsh as anything you might imagine. And, believe me, I found NO reason to smile when Ollie skated. BTW, Delbert, the book I recommended this afternoon was not to change your mind about anything (although you might look more kindly on Poindexter) -- I just thought you might find it interesting). Re. "getting to the bottom of stories about GWB and his use of coke" (do I hear any resident attorney demanding a foundation for that?) -- you say, "Let's SET HIM UP so we can put him under oath and ask him every possible question about his private life. If not why not?" Are you insulted by that view, Joan? Delbert, has anyone come forward with an accusation? Have you ever heard of "probable cause." Do you know ANYTHING about how the legal system is SUPPOSED to operate? Bush was a "wild child." That's no secret and, IMO, has no bearing on his fitness for public office. Bush, IMO, would be wise to simply say, "Thank God, I got through those days and thank God they're over. I am not going into details and I am not going to respond to rumors or allegations. Period." Clinton would have been wise to do that rather than wagging his finger in my face and Nixon would have had no trouble if he had simply kept his mouth shut. Delbert, please don't tell us you think Clinton was the first or only politician run to ground by the opposition. You know, one thing has always bothered me about "The Man from Hot Springs:" he doesn't seem to have any typical "men" around him. Not meant in a chauvinistic way -- he just seems like a flim flam lady's man whose male entourage could be described as androgynous at best (convicted felon Webster Hubbell (sp?) being a notable exception). Is there even a hint in the CV that this person ever went through any sort of male "rite of passage?" Ever see a picture of him with a bat or a ball or a fishing pole? Hey -- I may be bitching but I'm not saying it wasn't fair. They counted the votes and he had the most. I didn't vote for him but I'm from the ".....king is dead. Long live the king" school. Sorry -- the guy blew it. If Reagan had been half the actor, he wouldn't have gotten into politics in the first place. IMO, barring a spectacular cock-up, there will be a GOP president in 2001. You sure you don't want GWB to be the one?
