Here is a mass customization story I experienced recently:

I moved into a new house and DC and ordered TWO window blinds, custom made, through a local home furnishings store. They told me it would take about 6 weeks. I reluctantly said OK, paid and waited. The snail mailed my invoice to the manufacturer in South Carolina.

8 WEEKS LATER.... I received a package. It contained ONE BLIND.

I called the store and this time they FAXED my order for the other blind to the factory. I have to wait another 3 weeks.

Moral: Anyone who thinks mass customization is easy is fooling themselves. Customer service and satisfaction should be the goal.
