Recovery Interrupts Losing Streak
The elusive investor confidence returned today. The markets were buoyed
by evidence of good health in the technology sector as Cisco [CSCO]
released a positive earnings report yesterday. The Federal Reserve released
its Beige Book, an economic survey conducted eight times a year. The
report said the US economy is strong, but is experiencing supply constraints.
Signs of inflation are merely "scattered" - good news for nervous investors.
The debut of Linux distributor Red Hat [RHAT] starred on the Nasdaq,
collecting a hefty 270% increase. On the NYSE, American Home Products
[AHP] suffered a loss of over 4%, after preliminary results of a clinical trial
suggested there may be a connection between fen-phen and heart valve
troubles. Bonds made an attempt to recover, with a positive reception of $12
billion worth of 10-year notes in the second bond sale offered by the
Treasury Department this week.
