Mika, Some basic thoughts :
We "techies, and would-be techies", are so enamoured
with 2G and 3G cell and satellite communications technologies -- that we have forgotten or fail to
realize the following:

A large segment of the world's population consider
their most valuable posession to be a bicycle, and have no desire or dream of owning or using a 2G or 3G phone.

Ericsson and others must meet there needs first, with
either wired technologies, or in many cases, satellite
connected phone boxes.

I think that Elmatador has voiced his frustration
with Ericy's narrow emphasis on RF Interface technologies.
I think that he has a good point there.

Regards,
Mardy.

*Telecom NZ cdmaOne* telecom-media.co.nz
That's Telecom's press release. Initially I thought that Ericy were not in the running because they had not taken over the Q! infrastructure division but months have gone by now and it was a production factory. I still suspect that Ericy will come in at the last moment with the best offer. There is no reason that Ericy or any other can't be included for consideration prior to a decision and contract.

It wasn't a government-type tender where if you are not in you are out [I'm assuming that but don't know for sure].

There was quite large business taken over by Ericy. It seems odd to me that they aren't getting what business they can. I agree they might focus more on 3G migration, but they need to maximize sales in the meantime.

I'm betting on a late run for the Telecom business! As EL M says, there was a risk-sharing component to the Telecom NZ purchase of cdmaOne which maybe means vendor financing and Ericy doesn't want to do that, but that's conjecture.
