MAR Ships and Receives Additional Orders for Multiple Custom Alignment Systems From Affymetrix Inc

SAN DIEGO--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Aug. 12, 1999--JMAR Technologies Inc. (Nasdaq:JMAR), a growing provider of precision micro-technology products, announced that it has shipped and received additional orders for multiple micro-positioning alignment systems from Affymetrix Inc., a rapidly-growing leader in the field of DNA chip technology.

These optical alignment systems enable Affymetrix to fabricate a range of disposable DNA probe arrays used as part of their GeneChip(R) system for acquiring, analyzing, and managing complex genetic information that may improve the diagnosis, monitoring and treatment of disease.

"We are extremely pleased to have the opportunity to work closely with the industry leader in their program to bring innovative GeneChip technology to the bio-medical market," said Fred Schiele, JMAR's president and chief operating officer. "JMAR's Precision Systems division (JPSI) has worked closely with Affymetrix during the past several years to develop alignment systems to Affymetrix's demanding specifications."

"Originally developed for use by the semiconductor and disk drive industries, JMAR's micropositioning and systems technologies are ideal for producing DNA bio-chip probe arrays," said John S. Martinez, Ph.D, JMAR's chairman and chief executive officer.
