A bed of roses?

*AltaVista is partnering with San Francisco-based 1stUp.com to offer the service. The service requires users to use a personalized MyAltaVista page as their permanent home page.

*A small window displaying ads will be run while the user is online.

*Analysts said that while free access may seem like a surefire hit with consumers, some users have apparently decided that it's not worth it.

*"Consumers are more aware of the value of their personal data," said Joe Laszlo, an analysts at Jupiter Communications in New York. "The fact that [NetZero] hasn't been a rapid success suggests that in US at least consumers are willing to make trade off of $15 or $20 a month in exchange for their personal data."

Greg,

Don't you just hate it when I do this?

This is the kind of desperate measure you expect as the industry shakes itself out. Not only is Alta Vista floundering, but CPQ has not been exactly impressing the street lately.

The CEO of Alta Vista was just on CNBC...I caught something that gave me the only reason I would need not to want it. There is a "power meter" that you have to hit from time to time to stay on. It brings up advertisements in addition to the banners constantly going. What a rip! I can just see having to hit the damn thing in the middle of reading posts. I'll pay my $21.95 a month...thanks. DB
