McDonald's tests self-serve machines

CHICAGO (AP) - In the tradition of the ATM and ticketless airline travel,
McDonald's is testing out self-serve kiosks, where customers can punch in their
order, pay with cash and wait at a table for their burgers and fries. So far, Oak
Brook-based company is trying out two machines in their Illinois laboratories and
one in children's "Playplace" at a McDonald's restaurant in Wyoming, Mich.
Competitors have set up similar systems, with varying degrees of success. Burger
King tried a text-based system (McDonald's is picture-based) 12 years ago in
Boston but eventually dumped it because of wrong orders and slow service, said
Kim Miller, a spokeswoman for the Miami-based company.

Now I have had another thought for a long time - actually ever since the first time I went to a Taco Bell. It would be terribly simple to automate that whole process (for about 7 years in my former life I was one of GE's eight Factory with a Future Program Managers, so this really is only said half jokingly...). I mean there isn't any part of the Taco Bell 'food' preparation process that couldn't be automated and turn out better. And just getting rid of the residual food garbage laying around the counters would be a health boon.

just a thought.
