They are educated technically- but not in the crucial element of self determination- that is why I put that bit about being "enlightened" in there- I wasn't quite sure how to describe quickly what I meant. I should have been more specific about what I meant. I was trying to say that it seems to me many have not learned how to take on the creation of structures that will take care of them eventually- but in the beginning require much effort to create. I see that slipping away in this country also- that elemental spirit of creativity combined with social responsibility and community zeal- but with a more general focus than for one's own ethnic or religious group. Not that it was perfect in this country, but with a certain amount of tolerance front loaded into our society by the Constitution I think we have had a fairly benign history- including our Civil War- you don't have Northerners and Southerners still hashing that out in this country- and in the Balkans that would be considered recent history it seems to me.

And I am sure you are right about the rise of Muslim fundamentalists. Those are scary folks with big plans.

Sorry for sounding too pompous for DAR. <g>

I know you have the grin added... but I worry that you really do think that there's some sort of "rule" about serious topics here. There isn't at all- and I love reading someone wonderfully versed in a field, as you are, talk about her subject with someone equally intelligent (as X is).

THe only real request at DAR, is that we treat each other with respect and if there is a disagreement, take it to PM. Oh, and that above all else- we enjoy ourselves and feel better for taking the time to be here.

Now excuse me while I look up Wahhabism!
