I also have to point out that several private biotechs have done convert deals, which locks the buyers up until an IPO (and probably a lock-up period). So much for Jim McCamant's "Most importantly, the buyers are not really investors in the company. They don't care about the long-term health of the company or its business; their main goal is to generate short-term profits."
