Something got me thinking when we saw my mother in law tonight...I told her about the AltaVista FREE ISP...She said, "Oh free? I'll bet they don't have a local access number!" I said, yes they do...but you have to look at ads(click on ads)...
She said "who cares..it's FREE."
I shook my head, because I am starting to realize that the angle of these "Free ISPs" cuts right to the core of the ignorant. Free means free to them. So you give away personal info...it's FREE. So you deal with a slower/crowded access...it's FREE.
But I realize that the free ISPs will be successful as the mailings that say you have won a FREE VACATION/CAR/DIAMOND...
I wonder if AOL will eventually give free access...not unlimited, maybe 15 hours a month or so...
Do you think they earn money some other way? Ads? Sponsors?
I wonder what can AOL do to fight off the FREE ISPs?
If AOL gets to this lofty 200 goal, will it be it's last gasp?
I'm not trying to rain on the parade, but it's just something to think about....
