Thank God! The PPI was only up .2% and the core was unchanged. I was so nervous that we might see a .314285714286% increase ... and the core ... I thought we would see a similar increase in that rascal ...

Needless to say, I could not sleep all night thinking about the PPI ... the numbers that I had envisioned would have surely had a detrimental impact on the Long Bond ... not to mention the ancillary impact on the 30 Moving Average of ARMS ... and the Bollinger Bands ... and the Put/Call Ratio ... and the WACC for all companies listed in the United States ... not to mention the profound effect this would have had on the A$, which had just stabilized around US$.65 ...

Nor could one downplay the impact of my estimate on the semiconductor capital equipment business ... I could practically feel LRCX's margins getting crushed under their own weight as the rising price of raw materials exacts its heavy toll on the Lam business model ...

Perhaps I should rework my elegant model:

Monthly PPI Delta = [((22/7)/10)*(.25/100)*4*(1000/10)]

... but, I will wait until the revised figures for July are published ...

Hitachi to beef up Singapore fab in 256-Mbit DRAM bid

Hitachi Ltd. today said it will invest an additional $350 million to upgrade its Singapore fab in an effort to spur die shrinks and further increase yields for next-generation DRAM.

The Singapore fab is slated to ramp up production of 256-Mbit SDRAM to supplement limited output coming from Japan. Hitachi expects to improve unit output of the high-density devices, and said total production levels should reach 700,000 chips a month by the end of 1999. The company added that it will further boost 256-Mbit production to 1.4 million units by the end of March 2000.

Hitachi is racing to be among the first and largest manufacturers of 256-Mbit chips in the hope that by catching the devices early in their life cycle, the company can garner higher margins before that generation falls victim to the price-slashing common to more mature markets.

Hitachi has been producing 256-Mbit chips in Japan since the second quarter at a current monthly rate of 30,000 units. Earlier this year, the company assumed full control of the Singapore fab, although its original partner, Nippon Steel Corp., continues to hold a minority stake for investment purposes only.
