"The colonial powers were out to earn money and gain geopolitical advantage. Civilization had very little to do with it.

Land, Labor and Loot. Those are the reasons for all government "sponsored" colonization. All other reasons are really one of those three in disguise. "Civilization" is a code word for cheap (or slave) labor. "Economic Development" is a code word for looting the colony of its resources. "Defense" and "Security" are code words for grabbing land. (I was a history major before switching to Sociology.)

I agree the it was rhetoric- hence the use of the " "- but they did make a stab at putting up a front- that was all I meant.
