I readily admit I don't understand the intricacies of these failures, but is it possible MCI and others are relying too heavily on software-based systems? There has to be a way to prevent failures. Am I naive to think if changes need to be made, they can be done without taking a network down?

From what you've said, I'm assuming MCI made some bad choices in how to manage their upgrades. And I'm certain every vendor around the globe is advising their carriers how to prevent similar failures. I would imagine Ascend is furious at MCI right now.

Your comments regarding the vulnerability of all vendors is well taken. There but for the grace of God. . .

Good to put these situations in perspective.
