I read an article some time ago which stated that for a new technology to replace an entrenched one, it had to be about ten times better: Any less and users won't feel compelled to switch from what's known and familiar. The learning curve simply has a price which is too high. We saw this with the 8-Track vs Cassette, Beta vs VHS, CD vs LP records... When I look at these examples, I don't see a big investment in learning, but only in hardware. One swipe from the old credit card and you're up-to-date.

Compare that with computers: The time and effort to become productive with computer hardware and software is considerable, and in today's world, time and effort is a scarce resource. Imagine the screaming, crying, and hollering in an organization if management decided to replace Windows, which everyone knows, with something 'better', but not by much. It wouldn't be worth the hassle. Individuals are even more 'sticky' as consumers.

Is Microsoft doomed? Not until human nature changes.

Cheers, PW.
