Good evening, Jill. It's good to have you back on SI, though I'll miss having you out west <g>.

How you split up the his & hers portfolio is less important than the principle of having his & hers portfolios. Since my wife and I have both participated in 401Ks which we rolled into Fidelity IRAs, it was easiest to take control of our own accounts. The current ratio is about 2:1, but she's intent on closing the gap <g>. A little bit of competition, and a lot of cooperation has made for a win/win game and a lot of fun.

A "fair" split might be based on investing experience, or willingness to accept risk, or age, or a roll of the dice. If a couple can't negotiate a split, they probably aren't suited for this particular gambit.

Two good flicks for this weekend - Runaway Bride is a hoot, and the romantic Shakespeare in Love is out on video.

I hope you're doing well, and if I remember your portfolio accurately, you should be smiling about now... like me <vbg>.

Frank
