Free, strings freely attached

AltaVista has jumped on the freebie bandwagon. The Internet search engine,
created in the research department of Digital Equipment, is now the largest
US company to offer free Net access to users willing to look at targeted ads
and provide demographic information. AltaVista's move followed a wave of
'free' computer offers that generally involve subsidies in exchange for
contracted Internet access. AltaVista, which is now owned by Compaq
Computer, is being sold to CMGI, based in Andover. The free-ISP pitch fits
CMGI CEO David Wetherell's aggressive style. Even if the plan loses
money, and it could easily cost tens of millions of dollars annually, it could
rapidly assemble an audience for AltaVista that could presage a profitable
public stock sale. 'I question the economics. But Wetherell doesn't need
economics for Wall Street,' said securities analyst Alan Braverman.
