Car insurance is not a good analogy. There are many uninsured drivers and the federal government does not run car insurance programs (thank god). I can see it now... MEDICAR...$2,000 a year in taxes just for insurance and maintenance on a, say, Chevy GEO. Something goes wrong with the car and a committee decides which mechanic you must go to... they decide on a mechanic on the other side of town (he needs the business)... so your car is towed 40 miles (which means more paperwork - in triplicate - you must fill out)... since you do not have a job that society deems crucial (such as physician, mailman or dogcatcher) you do not qualify for a rental car. The mechanic (although not busy) says your car won't be ready for three days. He has to requisition parts from the government approved dealers on the list. Besides, he must also get the specs on your GEO since he is used to working on Volvos. In the meantime, he has another job ahead of you. He must work on a new Mercedes that has a fuel filter problem brought into him by an indigent farm worker who is not a U.S. citizen. The work will be done at taxpayer expense because the man's wife is pregnant and requires free prenatal care at an assigned hospital and a committee has determined that the need for their car is greater than yours anyway. Oh, and by the way, the fuel filter is on backorder, so you may not get your car for up to FIVE days because OSHA regulations state that only one car must be worked on at a time. Thank you for your business, sir! [The following year, because of unforeseen expenses and an increase in the inflation rate, Congress increases the amount taxed for MediCar. Your fair share on a 6-year old GEO has just gone up to $2,300 a year. Get a horse, pal!! Ha-ha...]
