Hope I'm off base.<

I'm speaking out of turn here, and on top of that I'm gonna speak for Steven. I've read enough of his posts to know that he 1) is a patriot, i.e. respects the USA and its ideals, and 2) is mighty peeved at some of its leadership's horrific and atrocious foreign policies. The sort of thing that gets such patchy coverage in our domestic news that very few people realize about bullshit like what we did in Cuba, Nicaragua ... the Philippines. So I'm confident that Steve loves the USA and would like to see her behave better. I would also - imo our foreign policy drips of hypocrisy. Part of that is a flaw of our revolving-door Gov't and part is a lasting institutional belief that what's good for the USA is good for the world.

China needs nukes for defense? From whom? Japan? Taiwan? Vietnam? The Philippines? The U.S.?

You may recall some rather serious difficulties they had with the former Soviet Union? And a rather extensive land border? Not to mention that they still consider themselves a socialist state, and socialist states are not particularly popular with the world's most thoroughly nuclear power. Whether or not we think they ought to feel threatened by us, there is little doubt that they do.

Do you honestly believe that China is striving for or has ever seriously sought a first-strike capability?

I'm beginning to get the feeling that nothing would make you happier than to see some non-European nation rub USA nose in the dirt.

I would like to see the US treat non-European nations as equals that are as entitled to pursue their national interests as we are to pursue ours. You may consider that rubbing our nose in the dirt; some Americans seem to. I don't.

If a country has ONE nuke and an intercontinental delivery system, it's a problem.

We have nukes and delivery systems aplenty. Does that make us a problem? Not to us, maybe. But to others?

BTW, do you think Lincoln would have been wise to free the slaves gradually? There have been problems, as you know.

Apples and oranges, but even with the distinction a somewhat cautious transition might have been considered if the slaves had possessed a nuclear arsenal.

Are the residents of what was Yugoslavia better off "free" than they were under the former regime? If a military regime takes over in Russia, will the Russians be better off?

Again, "freedom" means a good deal more than the absence of communism.

Michael, I have been reading Steven's postings for a long time and I don't agree that he particularly wants to see this country's nose rubbed in the dirt. I think he has merely had too much time seeing the reality behind The Ugly American to fall in with every bit of lunacy in which this country has been known to indulge.

BTW, re your If a country has ONE nuke and an intercontinental delivery system, it's a problem. Am I the only person on this thread who has been very nervous about what the Indians and the Pakistanis have been up to lately?
