TEXT:
The Canadian Press - Toronto reports "Free Internet access poised to sweep North America". Jim
Carroll, co-author of the Canadian Internet handbook said free access for Canadians is inevitable.
Internet access is becoming a commodity,
he said noting that a company in Alberta is already offering
free access to clients in Calgary and Edmonton. As with Alta-Vista's new service, Cybersurf Corp.
makes money through advertising which is permanently displayed on a portion of the user's computer
screen. The Altavista service - the first of its kind offered by a large, band-name Internet company - is
similar to Cybersurf's in that users have to click on a number of ads to get to the Internet. "Why continue
to pay $240 a year when you can get a perfectly good service for free that meets your needs?" said
Charles Rashall, vice-president of sales and marketing at Alta Vista in Palo Alto, Calif.
