Most would have been able to throw darts at 50 good stocks, and any one of them would have been up

Sadly this is far less true than you might think over say the last 2 1/2 years. Small cap stocks have severely underperformed. Many growth stocks that took a pounding during the asian crisis have never recovered because all the money flowed to internet stocks instead.

In addition some former high quality companies have blundered bad enough to drive their stock into the ground. CPQ and COMS are two good examples.

Then there are stocks that have basically gone nowhere. T is a good example.

The market has not been as rosy as the indexes and the internet stocks imply. Long term holds only make money if you pick the right stocks, even in a bull market.
