Pat - Raman laser not the same as 1300/1500

The "Raman Laser" is a fiber laser, pumped with a semiconductor laser at 920 nm. It is used to make a Raman Amplifier, which is an optical amplifier that uses ordinary fiber, like that found in most undersea and terrestrial cables, to do the actual amplification of the light. So, semiconductor light to fiber light to fiber amplifier...The light from the Raman laser is injected into the ordinary fiber, and it actually amplifies the "signal" light significantly. The IOC (sorry SDLIO) products are presently using non-SDL lasers for their 1300 and 1500 nm semiconductor sources, which is something others have pointed out SDL does not like to do...thus my post. IMHO, I agree with not wanting to outsource at the "core" level of the company...
