I agree with you that Social Security has gotten far out of hand, though I don't necessarily disagree with the basic principle of a national retirement system which will allow people who don't have private pension coverage to retire at some point in their lives. (It's easy to say that these people should be saving for their retirement. But when I look at many of my clients, what they are making, what they are capable of making in this society with the skills the public school system gave them, and with the minimum wage what it is, that's not a feasible reality.)

But since we have the system, and it has been draining money from two generations which they could have used for other purposes (including, perhaps, saving some) it's not easy to know what to do about it. I (and probably you, and perhaps even Terry) would scream bloody murder if we were told that having put all that money into the system based on a promise of some money for our own retirements the government turned around and said "sorry, Charlie, no money for you."

It's easy to complain about Social Security. Do you have a realistic suggestion for what to do about it?
