Social Security checks to be mailed early to avoid Y2K problems
August 11, 1999 - Sun Sentinal

The Social Security Administration has solved its Year 2000 computer problem, but it plans to deliver benefit checks on Dec. 29 to local post offices just in case others have problems with the change to the new year ...

If banks have computer problems and checks cannot be processed on Jan. 3 ... the Social Security Administration will immediately contact the Treasury Department and issue replacement checks through the mail or to another financial institution...

FYI:
- Three-quarters of SS payments are deposited electronically.
- U.S. Postal Service isn't compliant.
- If more than a few dozen banks go down, the SSA phone lines will be busy 24 hours a day.
