I too voted for Dole in 96, with my reasoning being that the Libertarian candidate didn't have a snowball's chance in hell, with the main objective being to un-ass Clinton from the Oval Office, no matter who replaced him.

You are right about the dominance of Randism amongst the Libertarian party upper heirarchy. I agree with some facets of Randian Objectivism but other parts seem counterproductive, and others, while fun to debate at the coffee house, don't stand up under the pressures of the real world. One of the tenets of Objectivism is atheism. While I am an atheist myself, I find the concept of atheism as political doctrine abhorrent. Atheism or theism of any sort is a intensely personal issue and there is no more place for official atheism than there is a place for enforced religion. I believe that the rank and file of the Libertarian Party overwhelmingly shares my view on this. I leave the epistemology, value theories, and metaphysics of Objectivism to the pundits. I do however subscribe to it's politics which involve three tenets, Individual rights, Limited government, and Laissez-faire capitalism. These three tenets, sans the ethereal considerations of Objectivism are the bottom line of Libertarianism. And if I can't be King, then I'm going to go with those as my political philosophy.

Having said all that, if it comes down to a choice between voting for the Republican candidate for president in 2000 or keeping even a remnant of the stench of the Clinton administration in power, I'll vote for the Republican in a heart beat.
