>> greatest nation on Earth' could use a bit more detailed analysis

A bit of a broad brush, you say? Actually, I was referring to the fact that we accept folks from different countries who enter here legally as country mates, and create an environment where they can contribute to our culture and economy while they are in the process of enriching themselves.

As a non-Japanese, you could move to Tokyo, marry a beautiful Japanese maiden, have 3 kids, learn to read and write the lingo (no mean feat since 4 alphabets are in common use), and 20 years later you'd still be a gaijin (which is quite a bit more negatively connotative than "foreigner"). Contrast that to the USA. If they can find their way to a MacDonalds, we'd consider it politically incorrect to refer to a legal immigrant as a foreigner.

Immigrants become an accretive acquisition pretty quickly in the good old USA, which is why we are doing so well in the tech world (lots of bright Chinese/Indian/Vietnamese/British/Italian/etc. Americans!).

The streets are still paved with gold <well maybe silicon) as far as immigrants to the USA are concerned.

jmho,
Frank
