Dave,

There are lots of good reasons why new traders, like wallstreeter, should avoid chat rooms like the plague. Developing your own sense of confidence is so important for survival and chat rooms always generate the illusion that someone else is a lot smarter than you.

One great way to see what's hot and what's hot is to check the %gainer, %loser a few times per day. That lets you know where the action is. Even a filtered pick area, like Briefing, can give you ideas without feeling like you're chasing the crowd around.

Alan

In #activetrader Ive been following cheetah , woodman and recently started paying attention to a new player needlenose,, done well with all of them,, cheetah always good for quick scalps and tons of them,, woodmans also great and a very good bottom caller, needlenose calls some good quick trades but also finds 1-2 day holds that payed me huge. Its a great room to watch and can be very profitable if you have discipline to manage the calls.

i know woodman, have talked to him on the phone several times. this was more than a few months ago. great guy.

that said, i must say i am a better trader since i permanently logged out of those irc trading channels. far too much distraction, even if you're not following the gurus. i found myself always amazed at the people who would jump into a stock because someone yelled fire! or because someone said a certain stock was ready to run or would be a gapper. i never could decide who was more to blame, the gurus leading people around or the sorry fools being led.

i'm stating the obvious here, but let me say it anyway. we become better traders at that precise moment that we take full responsibility for our actions.

:)
