Are we talking about a leveraged buyout, here?

I cant see any way it would actually happen that ATHM could become a fully independant public company. The best I could imagine is that someone with big vision and deep pockets (not AOL) would come along.

Someone will someday likely build the fiber network along the power lines as you described. However it is not going to be any time soon. The certainty of return on the investment is just not there.

We will be "dragging this outdated legacy technology through countless additional future overhauls and upgrade cycles". I dont see any way to avoid it, thats the reality of life. Hopefully AT&T's SLC architecture will jump start the process.

Power companies are even more regulated than cable. Do they have the right to use their right-of-ways to make unregulated profits?
