Ian Re <<Does anybody know that there is only one company beginning with the name Komatsu?>>

I don't know per se,

But I am fairly sure that it the same Komatsu building both the heavy equipment and the DUV lasers. I think I heard it from Akins in a CC from couple of years ago. I think it was the one after the initial manufacturing problems from Cannon surfaced.

Ian, it is the same Komatsu. In Japan the growth philosophy differ quite drastically then here. For instance, Nippon steel has major semi businesses, that have nothing to do with steel.

As to Mani's question, I can only guess that Komatsu" must have leaped from "ranging lasers" (used a lot in big equipment to automate the "path" of movements) to power lasers. It does have the same term used (but completely different physical principles, of course).

I think that Komatsu might have some other businesses related to semi, but I cannot remember which. If memory serve, they were (and possibly still are) involved in construction of FAB's (the brick and mortar parts as well as the HVAC and clean air system for clean rooms), but that is by now a "fading memory" so someone may want to check on that.
