I didn't see the costume shop as all that "surreal".
If you look at as a child prostitution shop with
a variety of costumes for role-playing games, it may
seem a bit more ordinary. Having Cruise stand there
like a paralysed maniken (sp?) does convey a somewhat
trancelike feeling, but I thought that was simply bad
acting.
