John: Re LUMM, and competition to JDSU. There is no full scale competition to JDSU in my opinion. The closest is SDLI (which I also own and respect) but even SDLI is much smaller and much narrower in scope that JDSU after the merger of UNPH and JDS Fitel. JDSU can put together modules of active and passive fiberoptics equipment components in the future. No other company is in a position to do that and will IMO be a major advantage which JDSU has in the explosive growth of fiberoptics over the next several years.

LUMM is new, narrow and may be worth watching. But not a contender to JDSU now. Again just my observation. Chaz

John, Thanks for the link on LUMM. Reading the article was my first awareness of it. I think it will be interesting to see if it can become a full blown competitor to JDSU or not.

One note of interest is that we may see ongoing consolidation around the technology. Certainly the merger of JDS Fitel and Uniphase to form JDS Uniphase suggests that the companies are not averse to growth through merger and acquisition. With it's substantial 1st mover advantage JDSU is a likely consolidator much as CSCO has been. It will be fun to watch.

Best Regards,
Tom
