The technology looked good on paper, especially when it appeared as though PCXX had hit a brick wall at 100MHZ. Since then PCXX has turned out better than expected, rambus has turned out worse.

Intel had been planning to never ship a Pentium III faster than 550MHZ, coppermine would start at 600 and use only rambus. If rambus didn't do much for perfomance, it wouldn't have mattered, since there never would have been any direct comparisons. When the Athlon showed up, Intel was forced to junk its previous business strategy - now rambus will have to provide demonstrable performance benefits equal to its increased price. If rambus performed in actuality the way it was expected to in theory, the 300/600 parts would have been fine for PCs. Evidently it isn't.
