MCI WorldCom works to finish data network repairs

WASHINGTON, Aug 15 (Reuters) - MCI WorldCom sought on Sunday to complete
repairs to a high speed data network that has experienced problems for 10 days, idling the
Chicago Board of Trade's electronic trading system and disrupting service to thousands of
businesses.

The long distance phone company said it took a frame relay network platform out of service
on Saturday for 24 hours in an effort to restore stability to the system. Work on the platform,
which disrupted service for some Internet customers, was due to be completed on Sunday.

MCI WorldCom's (Nasdaq:WCOM - news) network problem began 10 days ago due to a glitch in software provided by
Lucent Technologies Inc. (NYSE:LU - news)

The outages affected about 15 percent of MCI WorldCom's network and 30 percent of its customers who rely on high-speed
frame relay networks to exchange large amounts of computer information in short and frequent bursts.

MCI WorldCom was believed to have some 12,000 customers that rely on high-speed frame relay networks, including the
CBOT, Internet service providers, banks and other businesses.

The CBOT, the largest U.S. derivatives exchange, said on Friday its electronic trading system, Project A, would remain shut
until Sunday night when the exchange moves to its backup system indefinitely.

``Market users worldwide depend on Project A around the clock and MCI WorldCom has let them down for one full week.
As a result of MCI WorldCom's failure to deliver on their promises to me early last week, the CBOT is pursuing all available
remedies,' CBOT President Tom Donovan said in a statement.

Another customer, a major U.S. retailer, said MCI WorldCom's network service began to come back during the middle of last
week only to grind to a halt again on Friday morning.

``Things started to get better, but there was some failure overnight and now we are in worse shape than ever,' said one MCI
WorldCom customer who declined to be named.

The customer said the network problems prevented him from communicating with distributors, other company locations and his
clients.

``I've never seen a network outage last a week. If they had been more clear in the beginning about the extent of the problem or
their ability to handle it, we could have made other contingency plans. But now we're just going with day-by-day information
and that's not helping,' the customer said.

The Clinton, Miss.-based MCI WorldCom's outage followed a similar problem at AT&T Corp. (NYSE:T - news) last year.
AT&T and other companies such as Qwest Communications International Inc. (Nasdaq:QWST - news) said last week they
gained customers as some disgruntled MCI WorldCom clients searched for new service providers.

zbyslaw owczarczyk,Re:MCI/WCOM using NN gear for aviation network. ? More reliable.
Probably. The true details " may " come out in time.

As for me, I am very suspicious that the MCIWCOM fix will fail again and we'll be back to square one in no time. I suspect the reason for the failure are flimsy Ascend ATMs that can't function as a true backbone. Traffic goes to routers and they haven't been built to handle the traffic. MCIWCOM miscalculated the weight of future traffic and bought into the LU/ASCEND salesmanship.

They tried glossing over it for the past 10 days because they thought they would get away with it , just like Billy did. ( if he got away, why can't we?).
Unfortunately for WCOM, as they will soon learn, the telco biz is different and I believe unforgiving. Especially when you have other options.

They tried pulling the wool over our eyes with the story of " too much congestion ". Well guess what WCOM: the so called "congestion" will only increase. "Congestion" is in Telcos, is NOT a rare side-effect: it is and will be a way of life.

The point is , they do not have a true, carrier class backbone that can take the heat. This is why they did not answer the phone to their customers. All they could say for the first 3 days is : we'll fix it soon". Well, you couldn't say that for more than 3-4 days.So they lapsed into silence.

They couldn't tell their customers that they have low class equipment.( that would have made them look silly ).

They couldn't tell them ( clear out at least ) that Lucent's equipment was faulty, although they hinted at it, because that would have pi--'ed off LU who after all was the only one that could get them out of the fix.

So with the CBOT ( their most vocal, persistent and powerful customer, all they could do is continue their lie: "we'll get it up tomorrow". Obviously they couldn't tell the CBOT that they were too congested and to lighten up on their trading activities, <VBG>.

So, now they've taken the network down.Rebooted the computers, cleared the hard drive, and we are back at a clean desktop. However Mon, as soon as a horde of anxious, angry,PC addicted, traders etc etc, start thumping away at the phones and PCs, the wires are going to start glowing again in the dark and......poop! lights will be out again, simply because their network is not up to par.

just my prediction.

I've seen this happen before in Medicine: somebody practicing outside his field of competence: a disaster. Happens every time.
Call me Mr.Cynical :) ,

TA

PS: Advice to WCOM: ( are you there?): scrap LU; buy NN.

----------------------------------

Tunica, after WCOM took over MCI most of the original NN contract with MCI(fall 97)was lost. Major portion of
former MCI was made form old 36150.
However, since merger NN has been consistently shipping limited amount of 36170 to MCI, which is using NN
gears to power aviation authority network.
I want to emphasize:aviation authority network.
Why this network was not switch to others gears ?
I think you know the answer-people live is priceless!

Also since fall of 98 NN has been shipping software upgrade(I think they call it 3.1 version?) to its customer.
Some of them are BT,Bell Atlantic,C&W,MCI(limited shipment),SBC etc.
During first half of 1999,Bell Canada was performing massive upgrade too.
Did you hear about any serious problems. I did not.
Anyone else?

MCI's 'Net snafu felt in state

denverpost.com./business/biz0814a.htm

By Stephen Keating
Denver Post Business Writers

August 14 - A week-long breakdown of MCI WorldCom's Internet
backbone is wreaking havoc with business and residential users across the
country, including users in Colorado.

"It's bad,' said Jason Swenson, president of Internet Colorado in Gunnison,
which has 1,000 unhappy customers in Gunnison, Crested Butte and
Montrose. "We've been getting beat up pretty good from the users.'

An estimated 30 percent of businesses that use MCI WorldCom's
high-speed network for Internet access and e-mail have experienced
problems, according to Bloomberg News.

Among the trouble spots have been thousands of automatic teller machines
and the Chicago Board of Trade, which said it will suspend its electronic
trading system until Sunday night because of the MCI WorldCom data
network problems.

Our "members and market users demand and deserve world-class
technology and service, and we are receiving neither from MCI
WorldCom,' the Chicago board's president, Thomas R. Donovan, wrote in
a letter to Bernard J. Ebbers, the MCI WorldCom chief.

MCI WorldCom officials cited a Lucent software glitch in its frame-relay
data network. Lucent is "working very closely with MCI to solve the
congestion issue, working around the clock,' said Bill Price, a Lucent
spokesman.

MCI WorldCom has a toll-free customer service number, 800-233-4546,
which provides updates on the problem.

The service breakdown shows the delicate interconnections between huge
telecom companies such as MCI WorldCom, the Internet service providers
that rely on them, and the end users who pay $20 to $25 a month for
Internet access and e-mail accounts.

"This is literally knocking smallers ISPs out of business,' said Mark Stutz, a
spokesman for RMI.Net of Denver. In December, RMI.Net bought a
company called DataXchange, whose 65 ISPs across the country, including
Internet Colorado, were down this week because of the MCI WorldCom
problems, according to Stutz.

"It's easily affecting 250,000 of our customers nationwide,' said Stutz, who
cited the first reports of trouble from MCI WorldCom at 10:08 p.m. Aug.
5.

MCI WorldCom, which makes about $1 billion in revenue from the
frame-relay business, could be liable for compensating aggrieved customers.

MCI WorldCom's stock rose $2.313 on Friday to close at $78.438, which
is down from a 52-week high of nearly $97 in June.
