NBC in talks to take 32 pct stake in Paxson - WSJ

NEW YORK, Aug 20 (Reuters) - Television network NBC is in exclusive talks to take a 32 percent stake in radio and television station operator Paxson Communications Corp. (AMEX:PAX - news), the Wall Street Journal reported in Friday's online edition.

The paper, which cited ''people familiar with the discussions,'' said the stake would be worth more than $300 million at Paxson's current stock market price.

West Palm Beach, Fla.-based Paxson said on August 9 that it had hired investment bank Salomon Smith Barney to help it consider strategic options, including a possible sale of the company.

NBC, a unit of General Electric Co. (NYSE:GE - news) and Paxson could not immediately be reached for comment but the Journal said neither Paxson nor NBC would comment on the current talks.

NBC is mainly interested in Paxson's distribution and not its programming, the Journal quoted its sources saying. While many Paxson stations have weak signals, they collectively reach 76 percent of the country over the air and on cable, the Journal said.
