Joan, There is a big difference between strategic mergers and conglomeration. What Intel is doing seems to be the shotgun approach of a conglomerate. What G.E. did was different. They bought cos. that fit in their fields of expertise. Also, they bought insurance and financing cos that allow a lot of shenanigans to stabilize eps. Gerry Tsai did the same at American Can, which became Primerica, which became Travelers. It worked. I don't see Intel doing anything like that.
