IT Index
For the week ending 8/13

The IT Index composite value rose 1% the week of August 13th, but it
was a scant gain compared to last week's freefall. Most issues were
flat or bounced up slightly, except for the two largest percentage
decliners from last week. Net2Phone(NTOP) and Clarent(CLRN) both moved
sharply on positive news. NTOP's distribution pact with NBC's Internet
sites, NBC.com and Snap.com, helped erase half of last week's 40%
drop, with a 23% rise. Shares of Clarent were 14% higher, closing at
$28.62, but 10 points lower then where they opened at the beginning of
the month. RapidLink, who already has built their IP Telephony network
with Clarent gateways, entered an agreement to utilize Clarent's
technology to build an industry leading VoIP Clearinghouse solution to
connect current and future customers to RapidLink's network. For 1998
RapidLink had $22 million in sales, which marks them as one of the
more dynamic private IT companies. With RL's success in sales and
minutes routed, over a 100 million minutes so far, IT investors should
put them on their radar screen's for when they go public. Recent
addition Teltran International(TLTG) rebounded from the recent
downtrend and tacked on a 25% climb. This coming Wednesday's(3:30 EST
August 18th) Fax-over-IP chat hosted on teltran.com will be
led by industry heavyweights from 3Com and LANSource and is a must
attend event for all interested in this growing field. Two members of
the IT Index who couldn't shake the losses were Act Networks(ANET) and
RSL Communications(RSLC). Shares of ANET and RSLC are well down from
their recent highs and continued losing ground, 15% and 16%
respectively.

Arel Communications and Software(ARLCF) is splitting the company into
the two natural divisions that already comprise their corporate
structure, Interactive Distance Learning(IDL) and Internet Telephony.
This will give shareholders the benefit of ARLCF's position in these
emerging industries. Two new research reports were also made public
this week, with new projections for the growth of the IT sector.
Synergy Research Group expects a 677% increase in the sale of VoIP
technology through the end of the year, and believes the IP-PBX will
further the customer base. A large portion of all VoIP technology has
been purchased by Carriers and Entrepreneurs whose primary business is
based upon telecommunications, with very few orders being placed by
the corporate world. As companies switch from legacy systems, a new
surge of business should begin to materialize in the earnings of the
IT Index. The strength of sales and profits will be necessary for IP
telephony companies to withstand the downturns in the markets.
