"A Right" is meaningless, unless there is an effective way to enforce it. The Southern State leaders hoped they had a right to secede. Turned out they didn't. In American law, the Southern states never seceded. They just rebelled. All Southern Confederacy oath takers could have legally been tried and executed as traitors.
