Five people face numerous fraud-related charges after Australian beef was illegally shipped to the United States marked as Canadian beef.
The charges follow an 18-month investigation involving the Ontario Provincial Police, Agriculture Canada investigators and U.S. customs officials.
Investigators became involved after a shipment of frozen boneless beef entering the United States was found to have come from Australia, not from Canada as was purported in customs documents, police said.
A total of 25 similar shipments, originating from two companies between July and October, 1993, were subsequently examined.
Four members of Qualico Foods Inc. of Hamilton were charged, including president Pasquale Paletta, 63, of Milton. He faces forgery and fraud charges, as well as two counts of extortion and uttering threats.
Angelo Paletta, 32, and Paolo Paletta, 27, face several fraud and forgery charges.
Dan Mullins, a clerk at Qualico Foods, has also been charged.
Vince Paletta, Jr., president of Can-Americ Foods Corp. of King City, also faces a number of fraud-related charges.

HEADLINE: PACKERS CHARGED IN MEAT SCHEME
BY: IAN TIMBERLAKE - TORONTO SUN
Officials of two meat-packing plants have been charged in a scam to avoid American tariffs by exporting Australian beef as Canadian.
Federal agriculture workers were threatened as part of a scheme to take advantage of Canada's free-trade status, OPP officers said.
Police said frozen boneless Australian beef was exported to the U.S. as Canadian. Canadian beef is not subject to American tariffs.
OPP Det.-Sgt. Malcolm Chivers said anti-rackets officers investigated 26 meat shipments, each 18,900 kilos. The shipments were made from July to October 1993.
CERTIFICATES
Police also say shippers provided false information to get meat inspection certificates from Canadian authorities.
OPP worked on the investigation with U.S. Customs and the Canadian agriculture department. Authorities filed charges of conspiracy, forgery and other offenses.
Charged are: Pasquale Paletta, 63, of Milton, president of Qualico Foods, Inc., Hamilton; Angelo Paletta, 32, of Burlington, and Paolo Paletta, 27, of Stoney Creek, both vice-presidents of Qualico; Vince Paletta, 29, of King City, president of Can-Americ Foods Corp., of St. Clair Ave. W., Toronto; and Dan Mullins, of Hamilton, a clerk at Qualico.
