DELL FIRST TO SHIP NOVELL INTERNET CACHING SERVER APPLIANCE IN Europe and United States Business Editors and High-Tech Writers
ROUND ROCK, Texas--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Aug. 16, 1999--
Tenfold Performance Increase Offers Faster Content Access
and Better E-Commerce Experience
Dell Computer Corporation (Nasdaq:DELL), the world's leading direct computer systems company, announced today that Dell Europe has begun shipping the Novell Internet Caching System(tm) - Powered by Dell(R), making Dell the first major systems vendor to ship the product in both the U.S. and European markets.
Dell Americas began shipping the same product, referred to as a Web-caching server, on July 8. The Internet caching market is expected to reach in excess of $1.6B by 2002, with the majority of caching systems coming as integrated hardware and software appliances, according to the Internet Research Group's 1999 Internet Caching report forecasts(a).
The Novell Internet Caching System - (ICS) Powered by Dell enables businesses and institutions of all sizes, including Internet Service Providers (ISPs) or Applications Solutions Providers (ASPs), to speed delivery of Internet content and thus enhance the user's computing experience. As the Internet becomes an increasingly important tool in the delivery of business-critical applications and e-commerce transactions, slow Web download and transaction times can translate into lost productivity and missed sales opportunities. According to Zona Research's 1999 report, "The Need for Speed," as much as $362.2 million in e-commerce sales may be lost each month due to slow Web transmission times(b).
Novell ICS - Powered by Dell runs on selected Dell PowerEdge 1300, 4350 and 6350 servers, and ships optimized and ready for easy installation and integration. The PowerEdge 6350 has emerged as a value leader in Internet caching, scoring the best single-system performance ever measured by the National Laboratory of Applied Network Research at their Web Cache Bake-Off in March 1999. Prices start at $4,499, significantly below competitive offerings.
BrunNet Inc., a Canadian ISP that serves more than 10,000 e-mail subscribers and 3,000 dial-up subscribers, and hosts more than 300 commercial Web sites, has realized tremendous performance gains, cost savings and manageability improvements since implementing Novell ICS - Powered by Dell. "With Novell ICS - Powered by Dell, we can provide faster service without purchasing additional bandwidth to the Internet," said Gregory Machum, president and founder of BrunNet. "It enables us to postpone the addition of bandwidth at a savings of $2,500 per month."
Novell ICS - Powered by Dell offers customers three levels of power and capability. The entry-level PowerEdge 1300 enables corporate branch offices, small and medium-sized businesses and small ISPs to distribute content faster and more reliably by moving it closer to the end-user, thus reducing expensive bandwidth consumption. It also increases the efficiency of Web servers by offloading redundant tasks to the caching appliance.
Novell ICS on the PowerEdge 4350 provides medium to large corporations, and regional ISPs, the capability to ease bandwidth demands and deliver Web content to the end user more rapidly and reliably, allowing them to better optimize existing bandwidth and network infrastructure.
At the high end, Novell ICS on the PowerEdge 6350 accelerates Web server applications by managing connections and storing frequently accessed or static content for quick retrieval. Web servers can then focus on tasks such as serving dynamic content, interaction with back-end databases and electronic commerce, resulting in increased performance, reliability and affordability. The rack optimized form factor of the PowerEdge 4350 and 6350 is ideal for integrating this solution in corporate and ISP data centers for consolidation with other Internet solutions. "Dell is responding to customer demand for solutions that make doing business over the Internet more practical and efficient," said Russ Holt, vice president of departmental and workgroup servers, Dell Enterprise Systems Group. "Novell ICS - Powered by Dell PowerEdge servers offers a tenfold capacity and performance increase that's inexpensive, easy to install and manage, and can coexist with the existing network infrastructure. Our standards-based caching solution provides a significant cost savings compared to proprietary caching implementations." "Novell Internet Caching System, optimized on Dell PowerEdge servers, offers customers massive performance gains for a minimal investment," said Ron Heinz, senior vice president of Novell worldwide sales. "Speeding access to the Internet is really the key to allowing end users to fully tap the e-business potential of the Internet."
Novell ICS - Powered by Dell requires limited administration and can be monitored and managed from any location through a Web-browser interface. Novell ICS - Powered by Dell's open, standards-based architecture, can be integrated with Cisco(R), UNIX, Windows NT(R), NetWare(R) operating systems or other switch and router environments to leverage existing network infrastructure.
