Internet users access MapQuest.com Maps and Directions in June Business Editors, High-Tech Writers NEW YORK--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Aug. 16, 1999-- MapQuest.com, Inc. (Nasdaq:MQST), a leader in destination information solutions, announced today that, according to June Media Metrix figures, over 12 million Internet users accessed MapQuest.com maps and directions from the MapQuest.com Network, which includes MapQuest.com and its partner Websites. This equates to a 19.7% reach of the entire Web audience and puts the MapQuest.com Network ahead of industry leaders such as Amazon, eBay, and CNET, in terms of individuals accessing its content(1). In addition, among users who accessed the web from work, more than 25% accessed MapQuest.com content. MapQuest.com generates revenue through sales of advertising and sponsorships on its proprietary website (www.mapquest.com). In addition, MapQuest.com licenses its Internet technology to leading Internet portals such as Yahoo!, Lycos, Infoseek and to leading retailers such as Blockbusters, Sears and Kinkos. Since its launch, the MapQuest.com Network has grown rapidly, and its rate of growth has increased over time. "It took three years to reach a rate of 2.3 million maps per day. However, in just the first 6 months of 1999, the number of maps per day has surpassed the three million, four million and five million marks2," said Mike Mulligan, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of MapQuest.com. "Media Metrix June numbers show our network reach is now almost three times greater than that of our nearest competitor and almost double the size of Infospace," Mulligan continued. "In fact, if you aggregated the number of visitors who accessed our content across our entire network, we would be ranked as the number 7 site on the Internet(1)." These results are reinforced by a June Greenfield Online consumer survey that identified MapQuest.com as the first choice for maps and driving directions on the web. When asked, the majority of the respondents (58%) chose MapQuest.com for maps and driving directions. When MapQuest.com's partner sites were included, the survey showed that 90% of online map users had accessed MapQuest.com maps or driving directions. This includes maps and driving directions accessed from the MapQuest.com site as well as partner sites.
