CLCM - Universal Wireless Communications Consortium Hosts Successful TDMA Wireless Symposiums in Latin America
MONDAY, AUGUST 16, 1999 5:45 AM
- BusinessWire

BELLEVUE, Wash., Aug 16, 1999 (BUSINESS WIRE via COMTEX) -- TheUniversal Wireless Communications Consortium (UWCC) hosted two successful TDMA (Time Division Multiple Access) wireless symposiums in Brazil and Argentina.

The one-day conferences, sponsored by Ericsson, Lucent Technologies, and Nortel Networks, brought together over 150 attendees interested in TDMA and WIN (Wireless Intelligent Network) standards development. Presentation topics included wireless data and PCS/1900 frequency band implementation as well as a TDMA roaming panel discussion. Additionally, the symposiums highlighted presentations on TDMA's evolution to 3G services.

"With the recent Ericsson $400 million contract announcement with Telecom Personal and UniFon to provide TDMA networks in Argentina, these symposiums and activities continue to build the momentum of TDMA deployment throughout the world," stated Sheila Mickool, president of the UWCC.

Presentations were provided by Antel, AT&T Wireless, BCP Brazil, Ericsson, Lucent Technologies, Nortel Networks, Telecentro Oeste, Telecom Personal, TIW, TESS, and UniFon. "These forums were a great opportunity to share information on the evolution of TDMA technology to 3G," commented Dr. Rich Downes, Latin America and Caribbean regional director of the UWCC. "With the inclusion of regulators, business partners, press and analysts, the symposiums brought together key industry personnel in Brazil and Argentina to learn about TDMA's success."

The UWCC is a Bellevue, Washington-based international consortium of more than 100 wireless carriers and vendors supporting the TDMA, EDGE and WIN technology standards. Its Board Members include: Alcatel USA, Argentina TDMA Association, AT&T Wireless Services (USA), BellSouth Cellular Corp. (USA), Cable and Wireless (United Kingdom), Cellcom (Israel), Celumovil (Colombia), Compaq Computer Corporation, Ericsson Radio Systems, Hughes Network Systems, Industar Digital PCS (USA), Lucent Technologies, Mobikom SDN BHD (Malaysia), Motorola, Movilnet (Venezuela), Nokia, Nortel Networks, Rogers Cantel (Canada), SBC Wireless (USA), Telecom New Zealand (New Zealand), and VimpelCom (Russia).
