First, what is invoked is a balance where individual rights are primary, but the impact on the broader community is taken into account. Second, since the slave populations of the several Southern states were quite large, and there is reason to think that the free white population of laborers was suffering by competition with slave tradesmen (which depressed wages), it probably was not the "common good" of the South to retain slavery. Finally, chattel slavery is so egregious that even were the community to suffer, it would be worthwhile to abolish it....
