REIN--news is that they will EXCEED estimates

MINNEAPOLIS, Aug 16 (Reuters) - Recovery Engineering Inc., a maker of drinking water systems, said Monday it expects sales and earnings for its fiscal third quarter ending October 3, 1999, to exceed analysts' estimates of $20 million in sales by at least 10 percent and estimates of $0.10 a share in earnings per share by up to 50 percent.

The company said these gains reflect sales of its household and outdoor water filtration products, based on preliminary information for the quarter.

''Wide consumer acceptance of our products and increases in our replacement filter sales continue to fuel our sales momentum,'' said Brian Sullivan, chairman and chief executive officer, in a statement.

In its year-ago third quarter, the company reported a loss $3.2 million or a loss of $0.53 a share on sales of $18.5 million.

Recovery Engineering makes drinking water systems under the PUR brand name. Its products are sold through more than 35,000 retail outlets in North America and through international distributors.

<<<My favorite take-over candidates are Omnipoint and Western Wireless - nice and cheap. It usually makes little sense to buy stock in the company purely based on
take-over anticipation. But in this case, a merger or strategic alliance will have a
genuine impact on the future of these companies. Their stock prices are currently
lagging the category leaders, because the sudden importance of country- or even
world-wide coverage is making them look provincial. They simply have no choice
but to merge or create stronger strategic links than the current North American
GSM Alliance. I've heard enough buzz recently on both to suspect that neither will
be independent come next Xmas. The technological development in the handset
sector seems to award them a sudden access to potentially far wider coverage in
the coming months. They will both probably show better than anticipated subscriber
growth when the 4Q numbers are released, which may improve their negotiating
