Smartstor Software and Pioneer DVD Technology Provide the Winning Combination
for A Complete DVD Storage Solution

Business/Technology Editors

ANDOVER, Mass.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Aug. 16, 1999--Smart Storage
Inc., a leading provider of near-line storage and CD duplication
software, and Pioneer New Media Technologies, Inc., a leading provider
of electronics and optical storage devices, have announced sales
promotions on bundled DVD components that combine to create a powerful
DVD storage solution. The Smart Storage sales promotion includes
SmartStor DVD Maker and SmartStor Access v. 3.0 software. The Pioneer
sales promotion includes the new DVR-S201 DVD-R recorder and the new
100-slot DRM-1004V40 DVD-ROM jukebox. With SmartStor DVD Maker and
Pioneer's DVD-R recorder, data-intensive applications such as document
imaging, prepress, multimedia, and medical imaging can archive
information directly to DVD-R discs. SmartStor Access v. 3.0 for the
NT server features enhanced jukebox management capability allowing
fast and seamless retrieval of information stored in the Pioneer
100-disc DVD jukebox.
"With the SmartStor DVD Maker and Access 3.0 software package,
users who want to take advantage of DVD's increased storage capacity
can now create DVD-R discs in-house, and then access those discs from
DVD-ROM jukeboxes and libraries. This process is reminiscent of the
early days of CD-R and subsequent development of CD-R jukeboxes. We
see the Smart Storage and Pioneer sales promotions as great
opportunities for data-intensive organizations that require the
inherent features of compatible, standards-based media, in addition to
the increased storage capacity provided by DVD," said Gary Brach,
President of Smart Storage.
According to Paul Meyhoefer, Senior Manager of Pioneer's Optical
Systems Division, "There's a great deal of excitement surrounding the
Pioneer DVD-R bundle, and with the support of Smart Storage software,
these promotions represent a powerful, turnkey DVD storage solution
with very unique opportunities for our channel partners."

SmartStor DVD Maker for On Demand DVD-R Discs

SmartStor DVD Maker is designed for data-intensive applications
such as document imaging, prepress, medical imaging, and video archive
using DVD-R media. SmartStor DVD Maker converts scanned images or
video streams into a premastered image on the DVD Maker workstation.
Then the software's emulation system ensures the accuracy of the image
before one or more DVD-R discs are produced, saving time and money
caused by corrupt DVD's. Furthermore, SmartStor DVD Maker also serves
video, multimedia, and audio applications by providing a sophisticated
data preparation and emulation tool to create and validate
pre-mastered titles. Using DVD Maker, these images are tested and
verified before being sent to the mastering plants for mass
replication. The software also has an easy-to-use drag and drop
graphical user interface (GUI), and supports ISO 9660, Joliet, and UDF
file systems.
Upon completion of the DVD-Rs, SmartStor Access v. 3.0 provides
hundreds of network users with transparent single-drive-letter access
to the media. For fast access to DVD-Rs, SmartStor Access v. 3.0
offers advanced caching features that include directory, data,
read-ahead, and Express Cache. Express Cache provides hard disk speed
when users retrieve files from the discs. The software also provides
users with an intuitive GUI that makes accessing DVD-Rs easy.

Pioneer DVD Recorder and DVD Jukebox

The DVR-S201 is an external SCSI-2 drive that writes and reads
both 4.7 GB or 3.95 GB media. A 4.7 GB disc can be written in
approximately one hour and is compatible with existing DVD playback
devices including DVD-ROM drives and DVD-Video players.
The DRM-1004V40 jukebox provides a 100 DVD disc capacity offering
up to 470 GB of data storage. Using only Pioneer manufactured
components ensures reliable communication between drives and robotics
and optimum performance of disc-access and disc-load time, which is
less than three seconds. Configured with four DVD read drives, the
DRM-1004V40 allows several users to access data simultaneously with
quick access to their digital stored information.

THANK GOD we have these "analysts" diligently working to uncover "diamonds in the ruff"! Who knew CUBE was more than a DVD chipmaker?

"-- If you're looking for reasons why DVD chip player C-Cube Microsystems (CUBE: news, msgs) is finally enjoying a decent stock performance, see Jim Hale's notes at The Online Investor. Hale points out the California company, whose MPEG decoder chipsets for digital video disc players have come to define the technology developer, actually gets more business from its Divicom unit. The division makes systems that transmit digital audio and video data. "These systems are sold to customers such as DirectTV, EchoStar, BellSouth and US West," says Hale. C-Cube's Divicom unit accounts for 40 percent of revenue and is growing about 35 percent a year, the analyst says. See the notes."

Thanks for the gumball, Popeye.
