LONDON (CNNfn) – August 16, 1999 British Telecommunications acquired U.S. publisher Yellow Book USA Thursday for $685 million in a deal that boosts its online directory business. BT plans to fold the New York-based firm into its existing U.K.-based BT Yellow Pages publishing operation. Yellow Book USA is the largest independent U.S. phone directory publisher with a portfolio of 300 directories with a circulation of 19 million. Most of the directories distributed in the U.S. are published by the regional Bell telephone companies.

The company has also extended its yellowbook.com online operation, which BT plans to combine with its own Yellow Pages Net operation to create what it describes as a "global platform". BT shares were down 1 percent at 993 pence in a weak London market.
