July's cellular phone sales hit record 1.15 million units

Aug 19, 1999 - With a rising number of subscribers for mobile phone
services, demand for cellular phones is soaring, as domestic sales of cellular
phones hit a monthly record 1.15 million units in July, according to industry
sources.

Currently, cellular phones are in short supply in Korea, and new subscribers
have to wait at least a week for their own phones, the sources said. For this
reason, some service providers are rushing to import Japanese products.

In July, Korean cellular phone service providers attracted a total of 1.15
million new subscribers, bringing the number of the nation's mobile phone
users to 19.15 million. Industry analysts predict that such a trend will be
maintained for a while in line with the nation's economic recovery.
