Bull on loose after daring escape en route to fight
MONTREAL, Aug 16 (Reuters) - Police were on the lookout for a dangerous escapee on Monday after an American bull en route to a Portuguese-style bullfight in Montreal crashed through an unlocked door and ran away from a Canadian border station.

``The suspect is considered armed and dangerous, and is all dressed in black on a 635-kilogram (1,400-pound) frame,' said Gerard Carrier, a spokesman for the Quebec provincial police force, Surete du Quebec.

The bull escaped from the inspection station early Sunday and has not been seen since. Apparently, the animal realized that a door had been improperly locked and managed to open it with his horns, said Suzanne Thomas, a spokeswoman for the organizers of the Montreal Feria bullfighting events. The bullfight is scheduled for Saturday at Montreal's Olympic Stadium.

Police have alerted farmers, golf courses and campgrounds in and around the border town of Lacolle, Quebec, 60 kilometers (37.28 miles) south of Montreal.

``This animal has been trained to charge on sight,' said Carrier, who advises people to stay still if they see it.

Police said they would try to capture the bull with tranquilizing darts, but would also bring along high-powered weapons.

The mishap is the latest to plague the organizers of the Montreal Feria.

Another of the eight bulls being trucked to Montreal from Lancaster, Massachusetts, near Boston, died while awaiting inspection by Canadian customs officers. An autopsy to be conducted on Monday is expected to shed light on the cause of death.

``We had imported two back-up bulls in case anything happened, so the event will go on as planned,' said Thomas.

In the face of protests from animal rights activists urging authorities to ban the bullfight, organizers have also made special arrangements to avoid hurting the six bulls.

The animals will wear special Velcro blankets on which the riders will try to stick specially designed banderillas. Bulls are not normally killed in the Portuguese version of bullfighting, unlike the Spanish type.

About 6,000 tickets have been sold for the event, which is very popular among Montreal's Portuguese community.
