Iraq To Raise Oil Outlets Capacities

BAGHDAD, Iraq (Reuters) - Iraq is on track to soon raise capacity of its oil export outlets to reach the pre-Gulf War level of 6.6 million barrels per day (bpd), an Iraqi oil source said in remarks published Saturday.

``Iraq has made progress in rehabilitating and repairing its oil export outlets in order to restore their full capacities,' the source said in statement carried by the Baghdad press.

Iraq has several oil outlets. It has three main pipelines, one with Turkey, one with Saudi Arabia and another with Syria.

Most of its outlets were closed due to the 1980-1988 Iraq-Iran war and the 1991 Gulf War over Kuwait.

The pipeline with Saudi Arabia has been closed since Iraq's invasion of Kuwait in 1990. The pipeline with Syria has been closed since 1980 when Damascus sided with Iran in its war with Iraq. The other main outlet is through the oil terminals in the Gulf.

Iraq is currently using the Iraq-Turkey pipeline and a terminal at the mouth of the Gulf in southern Iraq to export limited quantities of oil under the U.N. oil-for-food deal.

The source said the Oil Ministry planned to restore the export pipeline to the Turkish Mediterranean coast to full capacity of an average of 1.6 million bpd. Export via the pipeline is currently about 1.1 million bpd.

He said the Iraq-Syria pipeline had been repaired inside Iraq and work was continuing to fix the pipeline inside Syria.

Iraq and Syria, ruled by rival factions of the Arab Baath party, agreed last year to reopen the pipeline.

He said the two countries would soon announce the pipeline was ready for export with a target of about 300,000 bpd.

The Oil Ministry is also rebuilding the al-Ameeq oil terminal at the mouth of the Gulf, he said.
