I wonder wonder if it might be that of Auspex shot itself by failing to embrace or reward new ideas.

Could be, but the story goes that the James Lau and Dave Hitz left Auspex to form a software company that had nothing to do with file servers. The company did not succeed. In trying to come up with another idea, Dave had a brainstorm for a new file lay out that he called Write Anywhere File Layout (WAFL). He and James borrowed some money to build their first "WAFL Toaster" of 2GB for NFS file serving. They were doing OK, but went after some venture capital. Don Valentine got involved, called in a new management team. (The VP of Sales was hired direct from Auspex, I believe.)

So whether AUSPEX shot itself by failing to embrace or reward new ideas may or may not be true.

Jeff: The folks who headed Fairchild are probably still muttering to themselves.
