For the reasons I cited earlier, and especially in answer to Christopher, I do not think that states had a legal right to secede, and I think that they gave up all pretense to moral right by maintaining chattel slavery within their borders. There are a few disgusting speeches by Jefferson Davis decrying the attempt of the North to "enslave" the South. I cannot believe the lack of judgment and shame involved in the invocation of that term....
